Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is recognized as the best option for lowering the carbon footprint of the aviation industry. In 2020, we spun out LanzaJet to commercialize the Alcohol-to-Jet process developed in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
While SAF is a critical tool for this hard-to-abate industry, historic supply constraints, high costs, and technical barriers have made it difficult for the industry to default to SAF as the primary fuel source. LanzaTech’s waste-to-SAF portfolio breaks down these barriers.

Introducing our newest joint-solution for SAF with partner LanzaJet:

CirculAir™ combines the groundbreaking technologies of LanzaTech and LanzaJet to form an efficient and economically compelling offering that provides the aviation industry with a solution to produce waste-based SAF on a global scale.
How it works:
- First, CirculAir utilizes LanzaTech’s gas fermentation technology to convert nearly any waste resource – spanning agricultural and forestry wastes, regenerative energy crops, municipal solid waste, as well as Power-to-Liquid (PtL) avenues derived from industrial off gases or direct air captured carbon – into CarbonSmart™ ethanol.
- Second, LanzaJet takes the ethanol and converts it into drop-in SAF through our proprietary ethanol-to-SAF technology process.
The SAF made through this process will on average reduce the fuel’s life-cycle emissions by 85%, with the ability to generate carbon negative outputs depending on the feedstock.

By continually recycling waste carbon and emissions, CirculAir achieves the necessary economies of scale, reducing the cost of SAF and making it more competitive with traditional fuels.
